The younger Aurora was still in the galley, and had watched the exchange between the older version of herself and her mother with curiosity while sipping her drink. Aurora was also surprised at the hurt that was apparent on her mother's face as Aurora left the galley. Slowly, she walked up to the table. "Hello, Mother."
Tempest looked up in surprise. "You actually refer to me by that name?"
"You are biologically my mother," Aurora retorted.
"You are right," she answered.
Aurora hesitated a moment. "Can I sit with you?"
If Tempest was surprised before, she was even more so now. "Yes, by all means..."
Aurora sat down. She didn't really say anything, but at least they weren't fighting all the time either. It was a nice change.
Meanwhile, Kev finally got a chance to talk with Captain Jenkins about the future. "So Captain, please tell me as much as you can about the disappearance of the Hexan, and anything else that you can tell me."
"Like about your death, Kevcabana?"
"Yes," Kev said, startled. "Yes, about my death. It could mean I do things differently in the future."
"If I tell you and you succeed in changing the future, you know that it will affect everything that we stand for now, don't you."
"Yes I do, and I will have to decide whether or not I should follow the life plan that has already happened in your time frame, or try to change it," Kev answered.
"From whose point of view, Admiral?" Captain Jenkins asked.
"Admiral?†Kev asked. “Oh, of course, I was an Admiral when I died, wasn't I." Kev looked straight at Helen Jenkins and said, "What’s best for my ship and her crew. And the effect that it may or may not have on USI as a whole. Unless in the future you have discovered differently, then time is relative still. And just because one thing changes, it doesn't mean it will affect the net result. The chances are certainly higher, but when we make decisions that are based on fact, whatever we decide is already self proclaimed in the long run." Kev took a breath. "And besides, Captain, if we ever get back to our time, I already know the future so it might already be a change that is taking place."
"That's true Admiral. So, on that basis, I will tell you what I know. Some forty years ago the Hexan vanished under your command.â€
"That's correct, and please don't call me Admiral. I might be one day but for now I am not worthy of that rank."
"Ok. Well, the story says that the Hexan was heading towards a meeting with the Orton when she just simply disappeared. Never to heard from again until today. But half of the crew turned up a week later.â€
“Obviously,†Kev answered.
"That's all we know. But you, well, after you became an Admiral, Tahkisis abducted Chance again, and she brought Sklavus out, this time permanently. You didn't believe that it was possible, and went after him on your own. Legend has it that you two fought for days on a ship that was destined to explode into the Tryst station. You managed to set off the self-destruct mechanism, but with both you and Sklavus on board, there was constant fighting, and you didn’t make it off the ship. It exploded in space killing you. Sklavus barely made it off of the ship with his life, but he was weakened in the process. He was finally killed when the Chaos destroyed the ship he was on in his weakened state, and the fight finally was tipped in our favor. As Sklavus, Chance had taken over completely. They haven’t been defeated yet, but we are definitely on top now."
"That's quite a story," Kev said.
"Yes, and that is why I asked you if you should hear it. The deaths of you and Sklavus tipped the fight in our favor with the Federation, and I don't know what will happen if that doesn't happen." Captain Jenkins said.
"I see your point. And the only answer I can give you is I will decide our fate when it is time. I can’t make that decision now. But why was nothing found of the Hexan?"
"There was no debris, nothing. It was there, and then it wasn't. It just simply vanished."
"Is it possible for it to have gone into an alternate universe?"
"Anything in space is possible but how do we prove it and help them? We can’t."
"No, we can’t.†Kev sat quietly and thought over what Captain Jenkins had told him. A Security officer from her ship came over to them.
“Excuse me, Captain, but can I speak to you in private?â€
“Yes, excuse me, Commander,†she said, standing up. He nodded.
They walked over to a quieter corner of the galley. "What do you think of this, Drakin?" she asked her Chief Security Officer. "I'm beginning to think this really is the USI Hexan."
"If it is, then our future could be in danger again," he replied.
"I know that!" she hissed. She thought it over. "The USI Hexan disappeared over 40 years ago. We're going to make sure it stays that way."
